Mohammad Kabany, Managing Director of B-Horizon GmbH, provided technological details with the presentation “Artificial Skin for AR/VR and Smart Living Applications”. His company, B-Horizon GmbH, combines competencies from automotive engineering, microelectronics, sensor technology as well as hardware and software development. In his presentation, he emphasized that “the essential part of every development work is: Why does humanity need the function of our technology? Not the technology is key, it’s the function.” He also showed what it takes to create an artificial skin: It’s to measure pressure, temperature and humidity all at the same time. A highly complex effort around the questions “Which value do I measure, how can I separate or combine them, which materials should I choose?”. Amongst others our participants were highly interested in how sustainability can be united with the projects of B-Horizon and what the next steps for the company are.

When it comes to connecting sensors with ICs, there is no way around eesy-ic GmbH in our network. The Erlangen-based design house has been serving small companies from the sensor, automotive, consumer electronics, measurement and control technology, medical technology and automation sectors since 2012. Dr Konstantin Schmid gave us an insight into “Analog Signal Processing for Temperature, Current, and Light Measurement”. He described the sensor technologies from resolver, encoder, hall-sensor over NTC-and Shunt-resistor to photo-diode and explained why optimized ADC design is key.

Continental gave exclusive insights into their work at the TechBase Regensburg. Their team showed how digitalization accompanies us in our daily life and how sensors facilitate it. Therefore we had a live demonstration at a vehicle brought to us to see how the digital car key works. In their lab the software aspect of the technology was illuminated more precisely. An excellent way to show the development steps of the technology.

“Cells are multifunctional sensor platforms”, explained our host. At the Fraunhofer EMFT, a varied program awaited the participants: Besides exciting impulses on cell-based sensor technologies, we also entered the labs and saw the research work of Prof. Dr. Joachim Wegener and his team. With their research health issues like allergies can be explored and understood, animal testing can be minimized and the speed of Covid-19-test results can be increased. Not only visually impressive: the storage of cells!

What do Lego bricks, smartphones and washing machines have in common? “We make them possible“, stated Doris Wild-Weitlaner in her introduction. Especially the diversity of sensor development and the company tour impressed the participants of Sensorik Summer School:
As a hidden champion, Micro-Epsilon produces sensors for all kinds of applications: from food monitoring and shipping over wind industry to aerospace. With their contribution to the world’s largest reflecting telescope EELT, the company sets new standards in position measurement. A unique eye-catcher was the clean room, which was designed according to Micro-Epsilon's own standards, but also the brand new center for mechatronics. The participants were probably among the first groups of visitors there.

A new building was also waiting for our group at the CSA Group: The new testing laboratory at the Plattling site is the largest branch of the CSA Group in Europe with 12,300 m² and one of the most state of the art labs in the world right now. Our participants learned about the manifold measuring and testing technologies to make life saver. Be it battery testing, gas testing, hazardous locations like for oil platforms et cetera. The "Live Execution of an EMC Test" under the guidance of Seamus Murray from CSA Group Bayern GmbH was certainly one of the highlights of the Summer School. In the impressive facilities participants clearly recognized the complexity of testing.

At Vitesco Technologies, Philippe Grass gave an insight into the importance of sensor technology: “They are in every control unit – you will always need sensors to do controls – even in AI you need them.” He described the innovation process (innovation = invention+market success) and guided the participants through the maturation process of a sensor. For this we visited the labs, got information on the choice of the right sensor for the final application and had a live demo at a vehicle to see how sensor technology is applied in the customer product. One key take away of our visit at Vitesco: Sensor predevelopment is a versatile, multidisciplinary field that will shape our future sustainably.
